So, here I have a list of my missing recordings from my Morton Feldman collection that I've managed to document, directly from a text file that I keep. Currently, I'm not actively searching for more recordings, but I leave a wishlist autosearch system on running in the background.
In the mid-term, the main task I plan to undertake regarding this collection is adding tags to the albums I've acquired over the past 3 years—there are quite a few. This will allow me to listen to the entire extensive playlist while scrobbling to Last.fm and Maloja. However, I won't be starting this process anytime soon. For the time being, I intend to focus on listening to the albums that have already been tagged.
If you haven't noticed it, I'm a bit obsessed with the works of the composer Morton Feldman. I'm one of those 'Feldman completists'. His music is already part of my identity; it's something that makes me feel cozy and at home.
Some years ago during the pandemic, I was changing my career path (I gave up trying to be a teacher), and my ex-girlfriend suggested to me to pursue librarianship after seeing my Morton Feldman collection, which is to this day very messy, and it clicked. Never in my life have I identified so much with a professional path like the information science field.
Some months ago, when I learned about the passing of Chris Villars, the archivist of my favourite composer, it deeply affected me. Over thirty years, Chris documented the life and works of Morton Feldman with meticulous detail. His dedication led to the creation of the Morton Feldman website, cnvill.net, which is now largely archived on archive.org. That site stands as the largest and most comprehensive resource on Feldman.
Chris's dedication ensured that Feldman's legacy remained accessible to enthusiasts like myself. I'll miss his newsletters; they were valued by many in the community. My last interaction with him was thanking him for adding my new email to the newsletter. Now it feels like it was something more.
In tribute to Chris, I recreated his page of news about Morton Feldman's latest recordings, titled Morton Feldman Discography: What's New?.
His passing also inspired me to create this space.
I've always been into personal websites and the old internet vibe, which definitely influenced what you're seeing here.
Last year I made this list of 100 albums that I thought were important enough to be listened to once in a lifetime, and revised it on 24th January. If I were to make a list like this today it would be very different. I've put many box sets. I arranged them based on the visual aesthetic of the covers and the relationships of sonorities, and some particular babes like Kelela - Raven and Éliane Radigue - Jetsun Mila are above.
It was shortly before the Topsters' owner suddenly deleted the site.
